Under the Bridge

29 Nov

The newspapers today seem to be up in arms about how totally inappropriate it was of an X-factor contestant to choose to sing ‘Under the Bridge’ by the Red Hot Chilli Peppers, because of the drug references (ignoring the fact that they cut them out). They implied that it is damaging to children to hear these songs.

Not only is under the bridge brilliant, it is by all accounts, comparatively tame and inexplicit when compared to the to popular songs such as ‘There she goes’ the La’s, ‘Golden Brown’ The Stranglers, ‘Another Girl Another Planet’ The Only Ones, “Got to Get You Into My Life” The Beatles…the list goes on! And that’s just pop music.

I think that’s important that these shows and general culture starts to play more music like this, and I think it’s brilliant that the X-factor encourage people to sing music that isn’t nessasarily mainstream. And I certainly don’t think that it effects children.

Singing along  to Bad Touch and There She Goes  at school didn’t manage to turn me into a nymphomaniac heroine addict….

The Stanglers under a bridge!
